Seminar 2011
Globalisation and the Food system
This conference will explore the various aspects of further and deeper globalisation and its likely effects on the global food system with a particular focus on the trade dimension. With rising food prices, world trade can be hindered or reduced by national governments trying to protect their consumers; by consumers, preferring regional products as a response to what they may perceive as ‘too much globalisation’; and by attempts to reduce the carbon footprint of food products because of the climate discussion.
Other aspects to be discussed include the rise in speculation in agricultural commodities, leading to further price increases. This conference will be realised with support of the International Agricultural Trade Policy Council (IPC). The target audience will be the IPC network, trade specialists, decision-makers and policy advisors in the global food system from business, government, science and NGOs, and the media.
